In what way "mandatory" ?
Besides of for the dsPIC's of course, but your "tons" of
old-style code can't possibly be for the dsPIC's, right ? :-)

I don't know of *any* new MPASM that *only* supports
relocatable mode (again, besides for the dsPIC's).
