The fact is that I've done hardly anything with SDCC for the last two years, but there have been at least two other very active contributors to the SDCC port (and in particular to the 16bit processor support). Now this fact ties into your premise; my motivation for contributing to an open source project has less to do with satisfying the needs of others and more about satisfying my own. Whereas your work on XCSB and XCASM must address the needs of others else you'll not be able to eat next week. And if we both do our job equally well, in the end you'll have a tool others can use whereas I'll have a tool that I can use. To the degree that my uses coincide with those of others, our tools will satisfy similar goals.
