You can drive the signal line from the power supply in a pull-up fashion.. cause the PIC UART doesn't drive the line directly.. It only sinks, not source current... It just needs a diode, and it uses only 1 wire for comms.. which is a drawback with a fixed DC voltage on that line during "idle" times...
