Yes I work as a normal user and then use "su" to gain
root access. In Ubuntu you not have a root user by 
default but the first user can issue "sudo" to act
as a root. I have to enable the root account first
in order to use "su".

Don't forget, if you need to do something as root, you can type "su" and
enter your root password, to temporarily get root privileges. You don't
need to enable the root user.
