Strange...It changes for me when I File->Import... different hex files. According to the MPLAB IDE online help, "This toolbar only displays the checksum value. Checksum algorithms can be found in the device's programming specification. Programming spec's may be found on our web site." So. Even without a project open, File->Import... changes the Checksum displayed. BUT I'm using 7.10. Perhaps that's the key. I have 7.11 at home; if I remember, and no one else posts anything, I'll check that tonight.
