I am sure this topic has been discussed to death
before but here are my two cents.  Coming with a
background in CS and higher level languages like
C++/Java, I would always choose a high level language
over assembler if given a choice, simply because
people are much more productive in these languages. 
After understanding the chip, I can think of two
reasons for using assemblers, higher speed and smaller
code size...but then my experience with uCs is
limited.
