The battle of Kursk in 1943 was the greatest tank battle ever fought - and a great victory for the Soviets against the Germans. Soviet lines of defence extended for literally hundreds of kilometres behind the front lines. The Russian submarine "Kursk" that was tragically lost with all hands a few years ago was presumably named after this battle. A site which provides vastly detailed historical data down to moment by moment movements of units on both sides http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/avenue/vy75/data.htm You need to be a more than averagely enthusiastic enthusiast to appreciate this material. Interestingly, 50 years on the US military engaged Russian contractors to research declassified material so the US could write a vastly detailed computer simulation of the battle. One may wonder why. Here's a Russian complaining about it, quite understandably http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/avenue/vy75/sovros93.htm Googling: kursk battle - will give you another 100,000+ pages to look at. Some amazing (and perhaps accurate?) pictures of a Diorama of aspects of the battle. Most look akin to hell on a warm day. I find the pictures presented here somewhat hard to believe, but fascinating nonetheless. http://www.angelfire.com/nm/duga/duga.htm http://www.angelfire.com/nm/duga/duga1.htm RM -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
