Very few films live up to their books, and this is no exception. I thoroughly recommend the books BTW, the plot is actually very deep and quite complex. One of those books you can read several times and still miss things. > >Are the US accents off-putting when you've heard it previously >in English (yes, I do know what I just said) ? The accents weren't too bad, but I felt the plot was rushed through to the point of being confusing, obviously to keep the film length reasonable. Mos Def's Ford Prefect seems to play a relatively minor role compared to the book or TV series, his character is really put into the background. Martin Freeman was brilliant in "The Office", but lacks something as Arthur Dent, he just dosen't have the grumpy, indignant and frequently baffled manner that Simon Jones portrayed in the TV series. Stephen Fry is brilliant as the narrator and book, perfectly cast. Allan Rickman was pretty good as Marvin, but just dosen't come across as depressed enough, and the robot looked a bit "cutesy" IMO. (also had the wrong colour eyes, the books frequently mention his red eyes!). I saw the film with my wife and two friends who are ~10 years younger than us. My wife and myself came out thinking it was somewhat dissapointing, our two friends loved it. We then showed them the first TV episode to show what they were missing, and they thought it was rubbish as there were no special effects etc. How shallow the youth of today are! To be fair, the film could easily have been a lot worse, it makes a reasonable effort and like Alan says, it has introduced a whole new generation to HHGTTG.
