USPS has proven to be the best from my (pretty extensive) experience. FedEx
used to be better, at least for overnight in the USA. UPS is now pretty darn
good but expensive. USPS rocks. The only thing I don't like is the line at
the Post Office for the sort of shipments that I actually have to hand off
to a human (registered mail). 

One trick: If you are using FedEx inside the USA, send stuff out via the
Express Saver service. It almost always gets there overnight anyway and
costs about half as much. Not so UPS 3-Day.
