I've seen it done, but it's not a good idea.

What's the ESD protection on a pic pin?
What happens when you connect to a device that drives +/- 12 or 24V, 
and has a bit of current available?
What happens when you get a bit of a ring, overshoot or undershoot?
What happens on plugging in, if ground isn't the first pin that makes contact?
All legal under 232.
