About time I answered...

Thanks a lot for the replies. I checked out those links, plus some
others (that I hadn't found the first time I looked, for some odd
reason). Although some of the parameters are different, the
MPF103 works well (as I've finally found out, only today) instead
of a 2N3819 that replaces a MPF102.
Another good thing that I can say about the 103 is that it survived
to 3 differenet arrangements, before I got the right pinout.
