You simply can't do reliable serial at any resonable bit rate using RC. We've had some debates about the accuracy of the nanowatt internal oscillator, which is supposedly tuned to within 2%. But the best thing to do is to test with a crystal or resonator. The more variables you lock down (i.e. clock rate) the more likely you can find your problem.
