I've been suggesting to people that they can use GMail as 2 GB of online storage accessible from anywhere. Here's the logical extension of that idea - a GMail Drive Shell Extension for Internet Explorer 5 or above that creates a virtual drive in "My Computer" with files located in your GMail mailbox or archive folder. http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm This is such a good idea that it seems highly likely that the kind folk at GMail are liable to break it at some stage. I'm coming to the conclusion that GMail is a nice to use email system for bunnies. ie they are doing many nice things but also limiting the service in various ways to meet their commercial needs or to "protect" the system. Such actions are entirely understandable and, as the service is free, they are entitled to do what they want subject only to their terms of use. But some actions still annoy. eg attachments size limited. Can't attach executables and some other file types. Large attachments are liable to not be searchable for ad relevant material so they are not welcome. Executables might execute so lets not have them. ... Actually you CAN attach executables as long as you rename them. Makes sense. And I have had problems sending attachments (mainly jpgs) that meet their spec to my wife's GMail account when identical emails are handled perfectly by all other services. Sending a message to their help system results in an email full of cotton wool and references to voluminous faqs and user forums. Understandably, real help on a free system is about non-existent.
