More seriously, any of the popular PIC books (Predko, Peatman, etc) should be a pretty good for a large subset of beginners, especially combined with the datasheets and an online forum (like PICLIST) or two. There are things I'd do differently than those authors, but I thing it would be very hard for ANYONE to publish a book that was better in all respects...
