I'm using the ICM7221 This is actually a replacement for one that had a little accident. The application is a tachometer to measure prop/rotor RPM on model aircraft. A friend ordered one last week and used it for the first time this weekend on his electric heli. Unfortunately, a slip of the hand whilst adjusting the TX controls led to a "rotor blade-tachometer interface situation" and the LCD took the brunt of the force. Thanks for the link. I have found a UK distributor for the displaytech products, though it remains to be seen how keen they are to supply one device. Some of the other LCD distributors I've found have a MOQ of 500 or so. I suspect we'll end up having to get a leaded display and kludge it onto the gold plated PCB pads. As long as it works he'll be happy(er).
