I wonder if it's common in NZ and Australia because AFAIK you can't call free, but weekend tolls to Aus, US and UK are very very cheap through Telecom. "Talk as long as you want for $10" for example. Mum calls her 4 sisters (and boy can they talk) and the bill ceilings at NZ$10 (US$7) for maybe 5 hours of waffle.
