Don't be too afraid of USB. All *intelligent* serial port programmers I
know work with any off-the-shelve USB-to-serial converter. And there are
some with a build-in FT232 so they connect to USB directly. I guess it
won't be long before the first USB-PIC (18F2550 or 18F4550) based
programmers will appear.
