It's simply a standardized 4 bit font for use on 7-seg displays.

If you can convince the marketing weenies to use it, then its availability
built into driver chips can take some load off the micro. Of course the
marketing types I encounter always want the product to look different so
they never let me use Code B. Sometimes they want extra characters available
but a few times they just didn't like the Code B character shapes for 6 and
9 :-(.
