I rather like the LCDs from the old Nokia 3310 - 38x35mm and 84 x 48 pixels. I don't think it specifically fits into the category of "driven directly by the LCD drive capable PICs" as it just uses SPI. Not sure what kind of quantity you're after but http://www.jelu.se stocks them and I'm sure you can find them elsewhere. The only "problem" is that you have to write 8 vertical pixels at a time so unless you implement VRAM you'll pretty much be stuck using at as a character display.
