Hello, I'm trying to design a multi-layer solenoid wrapped on a steel or iron core. A physics book I have lists the equation for a single layer solenoid. On the internet I've found several equations for multi-layered air core solenoids; these equations are greatly simplified and don't take in account a value for the relative permeability of the core (I guess I could multiply L by mu_r, but I'm looking for something authoritative). Also, can anyone suggest a good reference book for this sort of question. Everything I have on hand is severely lacking, even my ARRL handbook let me down! Any insight or hints would be greatly appreciated, I don't want to wind a bunch of solenoids just to reach the inductance value I want...
