They change the gap between the rollers to accommodate a PCB, and slow them down. I think you still need to do a few passes as they can get the speed down far enough for a single pass. You can make you own out of an old laser or copier fuser unit, these work quite well. You've probably already found it, there's a Yahoo group called homebrew_pcb that covers this. Have a look in the files section, there a list of papers (photo, glossy magazines etc) that work as well as the special TT film.
