I was asking about how to see a sever on my own LAN from "outside", as my router would not let me route traffic out and in again. This is standard router behaviour, for reasons that make sense but are annoying. Thanks to all who replied and helped me take one more step along the learning-path. Several people suggested using proxy servers to achieve my aim. This works well. Here is one such web based anonymous server which allows you to simple enter the IP address or URL of the server (in my case, my own URL ) and view the server on one's own LAN. http://proxify.com/ I'm not overly impressed with the 'feeling' I get from this site, buty I can't complain about the price. During peak periods (and maybe always?) it pops up "busy" messages, and asks you to subscribe. The overloading appears however to be extremely transient and a retry usually provides OK access. One area in which that such remote access is invaluable for website testing is the testing of absolute URL's in a page. When these are accessed internally they fail to resolve due to the router helpfully getting in on the act. The external free proxy server overcomes this.
