In a similar application Russell had advised me to use 10R series to the
gate and 270R pulldown (for N-ch) + a 15V ZD, as well as using active
drives, for both low and high (in an N/P bridge) to get around the gate
capacitance

Are those 1N5819s going to be tough enough ? 1N5820 3A ? I went
for the PBYR745 (7.5A TO220, but I'm running more than your 1A)
