I used to have one at a cabin, they run on basically a pilot light flame. We found one used, being taken out of an RV (caravan, trailer, whatever) and installed it because the cabin was 100% solar electric - it made the jiuce last a lot longer. An aunt of mine had a gas powered 'fridge in her kitchen - they used to be available here, but I haven't seen one for ages. The only weird aspect was the little chimney coming up through the worktop, which you had to be careful not to touch. I used to have an electric absorbtion 'fridge, but they don't seem to make those these days either - I wonder if they're less energy-efficient than compressors? Or do they need the now banned CFCs?
