Another way to achive the same effect is to run a DNS server interally, and tell it that www.russel.servepics.com is whatever ipaddress. This is a less trivial aproach, but is more central, so easier to administer once set up. If you use static ips on your desktop machines you can also allocate nice names for these as well. You could also add a name for the router. Now whenever you want to access the router you can type e.g. 'ping router' instead of having to remember the ip address. The DNS server I use also caches requests for internet DNS lookups so if I need the address of e.g. www.google.com it looks it up once (from my isp) and that lookup lasts for a few days and it doesn't have to look it up again. If my ISP's DNS server breaks (very likely knowing Demon), it will look it up on the internet root servers instead. Don't know how easy this is to achive with a windows environment though....my server runs Linux (the only machine on the lan that does). Cheers....Mike. -- Outgoing mail certified virus free.
