ummmm ... C preceeded the VAX by quite a long time.  In fact, the VAX
architecture was very much designed with Pascal in mind.  Indeed, there is a
lot about the VAX that is remarkably un C-like.  Ritchie dates C to 1969-73,
and on his web site, has compiler sources from '72.  The VAX didn't appear
until the early 80's.
