>I love the Brynderwyn's (I got to cross them 4 times in 1 day once). >Wanganui gorge road from North is fun (River road is fun too but >different) The other one I like is to head west from the south end of the Brynderwyns across to Mangaturoto, and go round the north end of the harbour that goes down to Helensville. >Akatarawa's (Waikanae Beach to Hut) is marvellous. Used to be mainly >gravel (which MR2 may dislike due to clearance) but now mostly sealed. >Literally lock to lock for 20 + km. IIRC when the Rally of NZ used this route back in the late 1960's Andy Cowan started off from the Hutt Valley end about the 5th starter, in a Mini, and was first out the other end. Spent many happy drives through there. For the radio hams, at the peak of the road there is a track goes off into the bush northwards on the ridge and the Wellington ARC have a hut along there. Gets a lot of use on field days as there clear line of site for a long way for K band and higher contacts. Others I like is the highway that goes down the western side of Lake Taupo. didn't use to have anything like the traffic the SH1 does. Don't know what it is like now though. Napier-Taupo road is a lot of fun. Ahh well, can see I will have to organise to spend a decent amount of time back home :)) -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
