To start with, you might experiment with less than 8 bits of PWM for each color. When I was experimenting with this sort of thing (but I wasn't mixing colors), I found 6 bits to still look pretty smooth (though I'm not sure things were very linear at the low end...) That would probably decrease the period as well as decreasing the number of different values. Stepping by small prime numbers (3) would give you "similar" shorter sequences that weren't exactly the same the next couple of times through.
