Flat side to flat side :-) You can think of it as face-to-face if you prefer. :-) The motor shaft goes through the holes in the center of the coils. One coil remains stationary, fixed to the base, right in front of the motor. The other is attached flush to the disk. These are flat coils that are wound with increasing diameter instead of length.
