You can get plastic holders for them - a sort-of 
framework round the outside, with a belt-clip on the 
back.  That would strengthen it a lot (sorry, I can't 
remember where to get them).

However, if he keeps it with his credit-cards, I'd have 
thought it was pretty safe.
