It seems to have largely worked out for the previously non united states of (north) America. Some may see the results as slavery. And, as the info packs make clear, the amalgamation is not the same as making a single country. There are things they will share and things they wont. The UK are in the EU and don't use the same currency. Ireland does, interestingly.
