Significant numbers of locations on German motor ways in more bolt up areas have a narrow outer lane with a symbol to warn you. It seemed to be about 2 doorhandles wider than our saloon. Speed in this lane is still significant. Large trucks live in the inner lane and you can choose to pass them in this outer straight jacket. I found driving in this lane extremely frightening - but managed not to clip anything. Both my trip companions (who drove far more than I did due to my photo taking) managed to fold back mirrors a few times, but not on motorways.
