They recognize codes in the media headers. Media that cannot go fast 
says so and the drive will not spin it fast (in fact it's the other way 
around - media that can go fast says so).

Look for brand names like 'Plextor PowerRec' 'Ricoh Just-Speed'
'Yamaha Optimum  Write Speed  Control' etc.
