Back in 2000? Yammaha made a 52X CD reader that DIDN'T spin the drive at warp speed. It used 8 beams to read a swath of tracks at once. Good for serial reads of data (like gaming texture maps) but not for random I/O. Some drive (AOpen?) have a utility that lets you set the maximum drive speed so that you can safely read damaged media.
