To stop them interfering with radar speed guns? :-) Reminds me of the story (Urban Legend, probably) about the Harrier that was doing a low-level training sortie over the Yorkshire Moors, and it's anti-radar missile system (HARM, or something similar) locked onto a police speed-trap!
