Maybe he could use maple syrup as the calibration medium, instead of oil :) I also note that he is interested in accurate temperatures at 102 C only, and nothing else. Thus, repeatability is the real requirement. With his being into this activity I would guess he already owns a good thermometer that can be used to calibrate the electronic thingy. BTW, water boils at 100 C and you could probably add a bit of salt to raise it to 102.
