That's because it was designed for a specific purpose - connecting surplus gun-barrels together to form pipes! It didn't need to connect to anything else, and I'm not sure if standard threads had even been established by then - nuts and bolts weren't made for sale, blacksmiths made their own. And when standard threads did start appearing, there were many different ones (BA, BSF, BSC, Whitworth, Acme, UNF and UNC are the ones that are still around :-) Incidentally, to this day, ferrous pipes here are known as "Iron Barrel".
