Yes I am in Oz, Tasmania to be exact,

I am looking for something a little more sophisticated, something like a 
LCD dash with a speedo and odometer, temp, fuel etc.

We have already tried the LED ones but they are unreadable in sunlight 
and we need the odo function for insurance, his insurance policy limits 
the car to 8k kilometers per year and he is concerned that if there is 
no evidence of distance traveled they may shirk their responsibilities!

I the distant past I seem to remember a LCD dash that someone designed 
using I think from memory a 16f877 but I can't find it anymore.
