Over time you will no doubt build a collection of useful functions, macros and hardware modules. You will find that you can build tailor made systems by doing very little new work and that most of your time is spent cutting, pasting, configuring and testing. At that point you will probably appreciate some kind of software wizard that knows about your hardware and software portfolio and is able to generate new tailor made systems for you. You will not want something with hundreds of check boxes and obscure option lists. What you will be looking for is something that lets you draw your system on the back of an envelope, reads it in and performs magic. In other words you want a CASE tool that understands your systems and how you describe them on the back of an envelope. IPAD-Pro is a meta CASE tool. It lets you build a configuration / testing system that does things the way you want them done. It allows you to create your own visual programming interface that translates diagrams into target machine code and test procedures. You will be able to build prototypes quickly, perhaps even with your client sitting beside you describing what they want and getting feedback from the prototype. And you will end up with a detailed diagram documenting the system. So, if you're going to buy a C compiler make sure it's a good one so that you can use it with IPAD-Pro later on. Or you could try XCSB for the PIC. This is a kick ass compiler that generates highly efficient optimised executables and was developed specifically as a component of the XC range of tools (of which IPAD-Pro, ZMech, XEBOT, XCASM and XCSIM are all a part).
