I would try to build a small pwm modulator using two 555s, one to 
generate 50Hz frame rate and the second  to modulate 500us/1500us servo 
pulses using vu-rectified audio as modulation input. Then after gaining 
some experience I would port this to a PIC and start tweaking parameters 
in software.
