In this particular case, it may be the PC.  Character zero, is hard to 
generate, because most code will interpret it as "no character".  I did 
discover at long last, that CTRL-2 or CTRL-@ will get you that character.

Blame the BIOS, not the program.

There are other problem "translations", like TAB often changes into spaces, 
these are more program-dependent.
