Well since *some* of the data still needs to be saved, I think I'll keep the magnums for theft prevention only. For now, at least. I have downloaded and used the "Eraser" pseudo-gpl program, which seems to have done what I needed quite well. I was impressed with the minimalist interface and maximalist performance of the tool, and would recommend it for anybody needing basic (not DoD standards) empty-space overwriting. Furthermore, it has a nice automation tool that can be set to run periodically, thereby ensuring your deleted data isn't sitting around for much longer than you intend it to. IMHO, operating systems should have something like this built in to provide at least some level of theft security.
