I haven't actualy touched one myself, but I've read on a couple of the high
voltage web sites (tesla coils, marx generators and the like) that they are
a 'source' of high voltage capacitors. Led me to assume that they are a
high voltage DC pulse.

But you know what they say about 'assume' ;o)
