We went though rcs, cvs, and settled eventually on clearcase.  Each has
different advantages and disadvantages; rcs is ok for very small numbers
of users sharing the same source, while I tend to think of cvs as being
a more multi-user version built on top of CVS.  Clearcase is a large 
company
thing, I think...
