There is no one correct answer.  However, most people will expect to hook a
small RS-232 device to a PC COM port with a straight thru extension cable.
These are readily available.

I think of it this way.  I design my gadget to connect directly to the COM
port, but due to physical constraints the user may wish to use an extension
cable.
