I just added something to the protocol spec that should address this, but
I'd like to give it more thought before making it final.  Go to
http://www.embedinc.com/picprg/sw.htm and under the heading "Protocol
Specification" take a look at the proposed version.  The main addition is
the GETCAP command which allows you to not implement some features,
including variable Vdd.  The proposed version 10 is intended to be less
burdensome on simpler programmers than the previous versions.
