A couple of days ago I picked up some sort of clingy executable
that sends my IE off to various sites. I've tried anti-virus, adware,
firewall and scrubbers and manually searched the PC for the URLs
to the sites but the damn thing is still there. I'd like some advice where
to look for it or even more cooties might get in. I'm using XP Pro on
two machines, one is infected, one isn't

What happens is that when I launch IE and my Google home page
comes up, within a second or two, three more browsers also run.
These are sites for ring tones, amazon, travel, porn, insurance, the
usual spam crap (why on earth would anyone think kindly of a
business that got your attention this way ?)

It doesn't happen if there's no browser open but I go on-line with
OE or resume a GetRight download

It does always happen when IE is launched. The three extra browsers
are easy enough to close before they complete loading the sites. After
a couple of minutes another PITA browser opens and then that's it until
I'm done surfing, however long that takes
