That's what I was trying to avoid; in the original email I wrote
"I find [the stimulus window] cumbersome to use" because I have to
constantly switch windows/window focus.

I'll either redefine it to be a RAM location as per Bob's 
suggestion, or read GPIO into a shadow register. This might be
better as a matter of principle, even though there are no RMW issues
in this case.
