Providing 100mA@5V from 12V with a 1.5A (TO220) probably isn't much of a problem (what do you think is actually IN the average regulated wall wart?), but as you need more current, you'll have to be more careful. Cheap linear regulators DO have thermal protection, so it might be worth just trying...
