If you go to the "Archived WebSeminars" section of the Microchip Web site
then there's a presentation called "An Introduction to Controller Area
Network (CAN)" dated 23 Jun 2004 which may help.

I think this link will take you straight to the page:

The presentation is introductory-level and won't enable you to start
coding straight away, but it should give you a good idea of what can be
done and which (Microchip) devices you might choose to focus on.
